Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) may be most famous for being a World Heritage Site filled with 887 iconic statues called Moai, but the island also has large population of hundreds of wild horses.

These horses are often found drinking out the three freshwater crater lakes on the island, called Rano.

In honor of today’s #FriFotos theme of “lakes” here are some of my favorite pictures of the wild horses of Easter Island, and their favorite drinking lakes. Forgive me, I had to include a really cool picture of a moai.

If you’d like to learn more about the wild horses of Rapa Nui, American Scientist and author Jared Diamond goes into depth about Easter Island in his book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. It’s a pretty interesting read.
